The Governing Council of the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand has appointed Sean McKinley as the organisation’s incoming Chief Executive.
A statement from the Teaching Council said that its role was as “kaitiaki of the teaching profession”. Mr McKinley, it said, “will lead the organisation as we continue this important work alongside teachers, leaders, and education partners across Aotearoa New Zealand”.

Acting Chair Patrick Walsh said Mr McKinley was appointed following a comprehensive recruitment process.

“Sean brings extensive leadership experience across the public, regulatory, education and not-for-profit sectors, together with a strong understanding of professional regulation and public service.”
“Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation for thoughtful leadership, building strong relationships and delivering meaningful outcomes.
“The Governing Council is confident Sean is well equipped to lead the Teaching Council and continue strengthening our relationships with the profession, education partners, and government.”

Most recently, Mr McKinley served as Chief Executive of Toitū te Waiora, the Workforce Development Council for the community, health, education and social services sectors, where he led the organisation to deliver on its legislative mandate while strengthening organisational performance, culture and stakeholder engagement.
Prior to this, he held senior leadership roles with Playcentre Aotearoa, the Social Workers Registration Board, the Veterinary Council of New Zealand, YMCA New Zealand, and the New Zealand Psychological Society.
The statement said Mr McKinley has worked closely with professional and regulatory bodies, government agencies, education providers and ministers throughout his career. He also brings experience developing mutually respectful relationships with Māori as tangata whenua, as well as with Pacific peoples, tangata whaikaha, and other ethnic and cultural communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Mr McKinley will join the Teaching Council on 29 July.
