Discover Auckland Museum’s Unforgettable Learning Experiences

Auckland Museum offers students more than just a visit—it’s an invitation to explore, discover, and be inspired. With exceptional opportunities for learning through amazement and curiosity, the Museum provides an environment where education comes alive. From its collections of taonga and artefacts to immersive gallery spaces and bespoke ‘learning lab’ classrooms, Auckland Museum ensures that every student can engage with history, science, and culture in ways that suits their learning style.
At the heart of these experiences is AM Learn, the Museum’s dedicated education team. AM Learn are committed to supporting both learners and educators through engaging, curriculum-aligned programmes and resources. Whether students are learning about volcanoes, exploring Māori and Pacific histories, or delving into the wonders of the natural world, AM Learn makes education an active, hands-on adventure. Their passion goes beyond simply imparting knowledge—they aim to create moments of wonder and understanding that students will carry with them long after leaving the Museum.
One of the highlights of Auckland Museum’s approach to learning is the flexibility and adaptability of its programmes. With over 20 curriculum-linked experiences available, there’s something for every age group and stage of learning. Early childhood education programmes ignite curiosity through play and exploration, while primary and secondary students can engage with complex topics in science, history, and culture through interactive workshops and gallery-based activities. For schools or kura seeking a more personalised experience, AM Learn works closely with educators to design tailor-made sessions that meet the specific learning objectives of their students.
Professional development for teachers is another cornerstone of the Museum’s educational offerings. Workshops and teacher-only days encourage intergenerational learning, providing educators with the tools, resources, and inspiration to enrich their teaching practice. By engaging directly with the Museum’s collections and specialists, teachers gain new perspectives and ideas that can be translated back into the classroom, fostering a deeper, more meaningful connection between students and the world around them.
And this year, Auckland Museum is excited to offer FREE professional development workshops for Year 7 to Year 13 teachers. These practical, hands-on sessions introduce a new digital resource, Collections to Classroom, designed to help educators bring museum collections into the classroom to explore the big ideas, contexts, and practices of the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet and work with the internal project team to navigate the resource, learn how taonga were selected, and uncover their histories and significance to Tāmaki Makaurau. Workshops include small-group collaboration, where teachers can plan a unit of work based on a chosen collection item to take straight into their classrooms.
Whether it’s a scheduled school visit, a tailor-made programme, or participation in one of the Museum’s professional development workshops, Auckland Museum is a place where learning transcends the classroom. With dedicated spaces, expert facilitators, and a rich tapestry of exhibits to explore, students are empowered to connect with history, science, and culture in a meaningful way. Discover the possibilities that await your learners at Auckland Museum—where every visit is a chance to spark curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.
