Playground goes from underutilised to “the heart of our outdoor area”

When Oratia District School chose to work with Playscape, they unlocked the potential for a whole new outdoor area

When Oratia District School wanted to replace an underutilised central playground, they turned to Playscape to create a space that met their needs and reflected their beautiful natural setting in the Waitakere Ranges.

However, it wasn’t a case of handing over control and getting a cookie-cutter design in return, said Oratia District School Deputy Principal Kath Goldsmith.

“The design phase was impressively collaborative and visionary. Playscape truly listened to our pedagogical goals and the specific needs of our landscape.

“They managed to balance our “wish list” with practical safety requirements and budget constraints, turning abstract ideas into a beautiful, functional plan.”

Playscape’s playground designer, Reuben Maybury, said the project was a balancing act of the school’s aspirations and available funding.

“This involved prioritising key play experiences, exploring opportunities to stage elements over time, and collaborating to achieve the best value without compromising quality.”

The design incorporated cultural elements such as a waka and wharenui alongside age-appropriate play challenges and opportunities for both active and passive play.

Strong communication meant the school was able to minimise disruption during the build, even when unexpected weather caused a temporary pause.

“This careful approach ensured that all elements were completed to the highest standard and that the playground would be safe, durable, and visually engaging.”

Ms Goldsmith said the Playscape team impressed from start to finish.

“The transition from paper to pavement was incredibly smooth. The build team was professional, respectful of our daily operations, and maintained a tidy, secure site—which is no small feat in a busy school environment.”

Mr Maybury said the real value for Playscape was seeing the space come to life for the students and the school community.

“The project concluded with a school-led opening and blessing ceremony, which Playscape was delighted to attend, marking the culmination of a multi-year journey for the school community.”

Ms Goldsmith said the impact for the school has been substantial.

“It’s become the heart of our outdoor area in our middle school area.”
