OpenAI develops ChatGPT for Teachers
A teacher-specific version of OpenAI's ChatGPT software is now online, and free for teachers in the US until June 2027.

OpenAI has introduced a teacher-specific version of their ChatGPT programme called ChatGPT for Teachers, and it will be free for US educators until mid-2027.

ChatGPT for Teachers will feature a secure workspace for educators to adapt classroom materials, collaborate with colleagues, and prepare lessons using the generative AI model. School and district leaders will be able to create linked workspaces under one account. The software will also come with “education-grade privacy, security, and compliance programs that protect student data and support FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) requirements.” By default, material uploaded to ChatGPT for Teachers will not be used to train their models.

- Image generation
- Personalised teaching support, like remembering grade level, curriculum and preferred format;
- Connection with Canva, Google Drive, and Microsoft 365
- Examples from peer users
- Collaborative features like template creation, co-planning and presentations
- Administration controls for school and district leaders with role-based access.
The program will be free for verified K-12 US educators until June 2027. Educators will also receive an “AI Literacy Blueprint” resource to support responsible AI use.

ChatGPT for Teachers comes from OpenAI’s partnership with the American Federation of Teachers and collaborations with various Ministries of Education, including Estonia and Greece.
The company launched ChatGPT for teachers in late November 2025. Around 800 million people access ChatGPT each week, and around three in five US educators report using AI to save time on the job.
