Playscape creates new heart for Pukekohe Hill School

An unused patch of grass has been transformed into a vibrant, versatile space for learning and playing that is well used throughout the day.

<h4><a href&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;www&period;pukekohehill&period;school&period;nz&sol;" target&equals;"&lowbar;blank" rel&equals;"noopener">Pukekohe Hill School<&sol;a> had a vision to transform an unused grassy area into the heart of the school&period; Working with Playscape&comma; they have done just that&period;<&sol;h4>&NewLine;<p>Principal Simon Williams explained&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Before development&comma; this grassy area sat unused&period; It was too dry in summer and too wet in winter&period; Surrounded by classrooms and paved spaces&comma; it had the potential to become something much more&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><a href&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;www&period;schoolnews&period;co&period;nz&sol;latest-print-issue&sol;" target&equals;"&lowbar;blank" rel&equals;"noopener"><b>Read the latest print edition of <em>School News<&sol;em> online HERE&period;<&sol;b><&sol;a><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The <a href&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;www&period;playscape&period;co&period;nz&sol;" target&equals;"&lowbar;blank" rel&equals;"noopener">Playscape<&sol;a> team worked collaboratively with Pukekohe Hill School to create an outdoor learning hub that is an extension of the classrooms&period; Lara Croll from Playscape said the space needed to be functional year-round&period; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;As the space is located near the front of the school&comma; beautifying the area to create a welcoming entrance was a priority&period; It was also important that a beautiful existing tree was maintained&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Planting pockets are woven through the space to soften the use of concrete and artificial turf&comma;” Ms Croll said&period; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;The natural materials and planting help nestle and ground the elements&comma; and create cohesion with the landscape&period; The mix of natural materials introduces sensory elements for the children to explore and helps to provide a calming space for learning&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<figure id&equals;"attachment&lowbar;33769" aria-describedby&equals;"caption-attachment-33769" style&equals;"width&colon; 455px" class&equals;"wp-caption aligncenter"><img class&equals;"wp-image-33769 " src&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;www&period;schoolnews&period;co&period;nz&sol;wp-content&sol;uploads&sol;2025&sol;06&sol;SN69-PROP-CS-Playscape-2-1024x768&period;jpg" alt&equals;"School playground" width&equals;"455" height&equals;"341" &sol;><figcaption id&equals;"caption-attachment-33769" class&equals;"wp-caption-text">Image courtesy of Playscape<&sol;figcaption><&sol;figure>&NewLine;<p>Mr Williams said working with Playscape was a seamless&comma; and enjoyable experience&period; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;The design team took the time to truly understand our vision for the space and what we hoped to achieve&period; Despite the area being at the heart of our large school&comma; the team managed to work efficiently while school life continued around them&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;It’s fantastic to now see the space being used in so many ways throughout the school day—whether its individual students finding a quiet place to work&comma; teachers reading to their classes on the &OpenCurlyQuote;Hill&comma;’ or tamariki enjoying active play during break times&period; It’s truly a vibrant and versatile space that has become the heart of our school&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;
