Applications for Tūturu | Full (Category One) will now open 20 November

The Teaching Council has announced changes to the process of moving from a provisional to a full teaching certification.

Applications for eligible Tōmua | Provisional kaiako moving to their Tūturu | Full (Category One) practising certificate will now open 20 November 2023.

Previously, applications for eligible Tōmua | Provisional kaiako opened at the beginning of Term 8, due to the longer processing time of the old paper application system.  

These early applications were allowed to accommodate schools, kura or early learning services wishing to present Tūturu practising certificates to their Tōmua at end-of-year celebrations.

The change to application process was announced in late October by the Teaching Council in recognition of the accelerated processing times for the new online system.

The new date ensures six or more weeks of Term 8 have been completed for the induction and mentoring requirement for Tōmua applying for their Tūturu | Full (Category One) certificate, ensuring that eligible Tōmua more rigorously meet the requirements of the Registration and Certification Policy.  

Once issued, the Tūturu | Full (Category One) practising certificates can be downloaded from Hapori Matatū for presentation at the end-of-year celebration. School leaders wishing to take this option should inform the Teaching Council of the planned date.  

Those holding a Tōmua | Provisional certificate looking to move to their Tūturu | Full (Category One) must: 

  • Talk to their mentor and leaders about their readiness for a Tūturu certificate
  • Have completed at least two years of induction and mentoring on Tōmua, approved by a professional leader OR one year overseas teaching with evidence, to be approved by the council
  • Have been provided multiple independent opportunities to demonstrate that they meet and use the Standards | Ngā Paerewa
  • Be 0.5 full time teacher equivalent (FTTE) or more
