Introducing the Curriculum Advisory Group

<h2 class&equals;"text-justify">Following the independent review of Tomorrow’s Schools&comma; the Government agreed to establish a Curriculum Centre within Te T&amacr;huhu o te M&amacr;tauranga &vert; Ministry of Education&comma; supported by a Curriculum Advisory Group&period; This week&comma; the members of the CAG have been unveiled&period; <&sol;h2>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">In a statement&comma; the Ministry said&comma; &&num;8220&semi;As part of getting ready for Te Pout&amacr;h&umacr; The Ministry of Education called for expressions of interest from people to be a part of a new Curriculum Advisory Group to help us provide strengthened and inclusive curriculum leadership and expertise&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">&&num;8220&semi;Thank you for your patience as we have worked carefully through hundreds of expressions of interest to find the right mix of experts to help us achieve this&period; We are excited to now be able to introduce you to the Chairperson and members of the Curriculum Advisory Group&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">&&num;8220&semi;Our sincerest thanks to all who expressed interest in joining us in this work&period; is a working title and we will soon announce their te reo M&amacr;ori name which encapsulates the priorities and work of the group&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;div>&NewLine;<&sol;div>&NewLine;<h3 class&equals;"text-justify">The Curriculum Advisory Group<&sol;h3>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">The Curriculum Advisory Group &lpar;CAG&rpar; is helping to strengthen our national curriculum leadership by providing expert advice on the direction for the curriculum work programme&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">They will take a strategic view across the collective impact of the curriculum work programme and provide us with advice about how learners and educators experience Aotearoa’s curriculum system&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">The CAG will draw on innovative research and on-the-ground knowledge&comma; bringing diverse voices from across the education system into the curriculum work programme to strengthen our focus on&colon;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<ul>&NewLine;<li>equitable outcomes for all &amacr;konga and their wh&amacr;nau<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>the rights of the child&period;<&sol;li>&NewLine;<&sol;ul>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">The CAG’s advice represents the interests of all parts of the education system from early learning to senior secondary &lpar;including NCEA&rpar; in both M&amacr;ori and English-medium&period; They won’t do this alone&comma; however&comma; and will work with our other advisory and reference groups who are already working hard across a range of pathways and curriculum priorities&period; These groups will support the formulation of the CAG’s advice as well as offer the sector and wider communities’ opportunities to engage deeply in the curriculum work programme&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">The Ministry said&comma; &&num;8220&semi;Getting this right will ensure our National Curriculum meets the needs of all learners and &amacr;konga across the breadth of the education system &lpar;from early learning to senior secondary schooling&comma; in both M&amacr;ori and English-medium&rpar;&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Secretary for Education has recently announced that Te Pout&amacr;h&umacr; &vert; Curriculum Centre will be in place on 4 October 2021&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<div class&equals;"box-wrapper related-info">&NewLine;<div class&equals;"inner">&NewLine;<p><strong>Walking together &&num;8211&semi; Te Whakaruruhau<&sol;strong> <&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>To support the CAG in providing advice which promotes the needs of all &amacr;konga&comma; the Ministry announced it is also establishing Te Whakaruruhau&comma; &&num;8216&semi;a group who will provide free&comma; frank&comma; and culturally premised advice about m&amacr;tauranga M&amacr;ori&&num;8217&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;Their advice will canvas how our development of curriculum should consider cultural authenticity&comma; capital and nuancing in all the work we lead&period; This group’s role will not limit that of CAG – but it will support and supplement their work when an additional depth of expert knowledge in m&amacr;tauranga M&amacr;ori is required&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;Working together&comma; the CAG and Te Whakaruruhau will be asked to develop a te reo M&amacr;ori name for the CAG that encapsulates the priorities and work of the group&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<&sol;div>&NewLine;<&sol;div>&NewLine;<h3 class&equals;"text-justify">Selecting the CAG<&sol;h3>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">The Ministry said&comma; &&num;8220&semi;It is essential that the CAG brings knowledge&comma; expertise and mana to this mahi and we would like to share with you some of the criteria which helped us to identify and select our expert CAG members&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"text-justify">&&num;8220&semi;We know the CAG&comma; This means we have looked for candidates who brought cross-system expertise &lpar;i&period;e&period; knowledge of several of these priority areas&rpar; or candidates who had cross-medium expertise&period; She has much advisory experience&comma; most notably as a member of the Ministry’s Curriculum&comma; Progress and Achievement Ministerial Advisory Group&period; She is motivated about the important work of the CAG to ensure children are engaged in a curriculum that is worth learning&comma; Over time her interests in the broader education system have given shape to her research and teaching&period; Alex was a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group for the Early Learning Action Plan and has provided us with extensive advice on early learning education policy&period; Amanda brings a deep understanding of pathways through schooling with a curriculum view on vocational education&period; Amanda comes with 20 years’ experience working as a teacher&comma; school senior leadership and in the education advisory space&period; This broad experience has allowed Amanda to develop a holistic view across the educational sector&period; She is a strong champion of secondary education and equity of success in education for all learners&period; She is Director of Gray and Gray Associates and has been involved in a variety of Ministry of Education initiatives in both long and short term projects&comma; including professional development for M&amacr;ori teachers&period; Huarahi M&amacr;ori Specialisation&rpar; and Te W&amacr;nanga o Aotearoa &lpar;Te Panekiretanga o te Reo&rpar;&period; He is also a licensed interpreter and translator of the M&amacr;ori language &lpar;Te Taura Whiri i te reo M&amacr;ori &vert; proudly presenting a diverse curriculum that celebrates her Ng&amacr;ti Porou iwi taonga tuku iho&period; Erana and her team are guided by the vision of T&amacr; Apirana Ngata which is embedded and founded upon E tipu e rea mo nga ra o to ao&period; She holds vast experience in curriculum design&comma; particularly the development of localised curriculum for M&amacr;ori&period; Erana is motivated to provide equitable learning opportunities to all M&amacr;ori tamariki&period;
